# Carry material information into retention

Material concerns guide

Chapter 3 · The next appliance

Clear retention tray describes an appliance rather than naming its product. The active aligner's document cannot identify the retainer's material. The next product has its own label, while your concern keeps the status actually recorded.

Each chapter includes a completed example. Product examples explain documents; your own proposal has its own products and clinical assessment.

## The appliance's job and its product identity are different information

The phrase clear retention tray describes a design and a holding\-stage job. It does not identify a manufacturer product. A named active\-aligner document describes the item named in that document; it cannot complete a separate retention\-product field merely because both appliances look like trays.

The existing retainer guide explains purpose and designs. This chapter follows the material information across the transition, so the next item remains identifiable in its own right.

## A named retention material has its own label to interpret

Essix ACE Plastic provides a concrete example. Its October 2025 Rev.08 instructions include retainers among the appliances fabricated from it and contraindicate use for a history of allergic reactions to plastics. Both statements concern this named material.

The reading therefore has a positive result: a retention\-stage material can have its own use and history\-specific restriction. A description such as clear retainer cannot substitute for that product identity. The example does not establish the product proposed for you or the composition of every retainer.

## Worked reading: complete the transition handoff

This fictional packet carries the same self\-reported concern from the earlier lesson. It contains a named active\-aligner document and the words clear retention tray, but no next\-product name or new assessment result. The finished reading preserves four separate facts.

**Active care to retention: what carries forward and what stays separate**

| Handoff field | Information in the packet | Completed interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Active appliance | A named aligner document is present. | The document identifies the active product's documentary scope. Keep its identity attached to that item. |
| Next appliance's design | Clear retention tray. | The next appliance's design and holding\-stage job have been described. |
| Next product and document | Not supplied. | The active document cannot fill these separate fields. The retention product remains unidentified in this packet. |
| Concern status | Same self\-reported concern; no new assessment result. | The concern remains recorded with the same status. A change of stage has neither diagnosed nor resolved it. |

## The handoff has resolved the meaning of the packet

The known design and the unknown product are no longer being treated as the same fact. The history has also survived the transition without becoming more or less certain. Those are completed conclusions about the information, even though the individual plan still needs its own explanation.

When an exact next\-product name and document are supplied, they can be attached to the retention item rather than copied into the active\-appliance row. If a product name changes later, preserve which document belongs to which item. That keeps a future comparison attributable instead of treating every stage as the same material.

## Connect the next item with the whole proposal

The complete conversation can now keep three things together: the concern as actually described, the information for each exact product and the clinician's individual assessment. The same method works without guessing an unnamed wire, elastic, adhesive or retainer's composition.

For a current retainer or treatment concern, continue through your treating team's established contact route and directions. A prospective consultation request has a different job: discussing a new orthodontic proposal in person.
